There’s a tremendous shift occurring in the web today. The buzzwords thriving include social, mobile, local, check-ins, daily deals, and cloud… It’s a great time for buzz! But I think it’s important that we all take a moment to remember that we’re living in an environment of extraordinary circumstances. I like to think of this period that we’re existing in as the Recession Web. It’s under these unique economic conditions that we’re seeing many substantial changes to the web that we’re using today.
Jeff Turner posted an interesting article that sparked my desire to write this post:
Jeff Turner – @respres
Some interesting data here: The Shrinking of the Non-Social Web http://bit.ly/lzqW7G
The article (written by Ben Elowitz, CEO of Wetpaint; mentioned several times throughout) brings up some interesting implications from the data that he’s looking at. Most notably, that we (as web users) are spending a helluva lot more time on Facebook and increasingly less time on individual non-Facebook web properties. Continue reading The Recession Web
If you’re wondering whether or not APPLE is going to be a good growth buy, or if RIMM done, I think it’s pretty clear the answer is that Apple wins on almost all sides.
Katie Roof – @Katie_Roof
RT @JonErlichman: 3 years ago, #Apple’s market value was 2X Research in Motion. Today, it’s 20X $RIMM. #signofthetimes $AAPL $$
Jon brings up a great point – Apple is just trouncing Research in Motion on every front. I think it’s pretty clear that RIM is a buyout contender right now. Great reference Katie.
I can say, even from personal experience, the Playbook tablet is a pretty solid example of how poorly RIM is able to compete right now. It took me nearly 3 weeks to successfully sell a brand new 16GB Playbook, and even for a new product like that (currently advertised on TV even!), the best price I could manage to move it for was around $350… Continue reading Apple is kicking RIM’s Ass
Starting off a great day here at Social Media Mastermind of Orange County – let’s see what good stuff comes up today! Get the most out of it today – SMMOC goes dark next week for the 4th of July holiday weekend.
Cindy Ronzoni – @cindyronzoni
Thank you so much @ksablan for all your help putting together #ocregister #socialmediaday #smmoc. Greatly appreciate your efforts.
Kevin’s done a great job organizing & collaborating with Bob to put together a “backchannel” for the Social Media Day on June 30.
Kirsten Wright – @kirstenwright
The info from Allfacebook.com is incredible #smmoc
After the SM Day talk, the conversation moved towards things like FullyFollow.me, AllFacebook.com, and helpful services to interact & learn.
Got a great thread of a discussion happening around the nature of profit in social media. Who’s making money (profit) using social media?

Over the past week, I’ve been buried in development work (both code & business), and like I so often do when I’m tethered to my computer – I’ve sought out some new music to jam me through my days. Now sure, I’ll be the first to admit that apparently my taste in music is somewhat limited – I can typically find music I like in the “clearance” bin at Amoeba records (when I make it up to the bay). I am a bay area kid of the 80’s and 90’s, and my taste in music is probably stuck in some sort of post-Nirvana, “classic”-Soundgarden phase that will stay with me forever.
But when I look around at the music choices that are available to me today, I don’t see an abundance of real revenue-focused innovation. I see the same games being played as they were a decade ago. Continue reading Why Artists Need To Think Like Startups
Starting off another Saturday morning here at SMMOC (the Social Media Mastermind of Orange County).
Dave Cole – @HeyDaveCole
Surviving the #smmoc internet blackout… Thank you iPhone tethering!
Started the day off without internet! Might make the day a little wild around here.
Jim Walery – @jwalery
Talking page title tag best practices at #smmoc. Tough 1st topic.
Jim called it – kicking off SMMOC with a pretty good technical topic. Some good ideas, including adoption of ScribeSEO service.
Lisa McClure – @LisaMcClure
Nice title tag template “industry, geography, specialty” also “recent relevant and local” #smmoc
Good suggestions for putting together title tags – make it count. I’d probably suggest “human” as another extension of these ideas. Make your web pages human friendly. Continue reading SMMOC Roundup – June 18
This is a post about GOT…
Game Of Thrones – @GameOfThrones
“I have never been nothing. I am the blood of the dragon.” WATCH Recap: http://itsh.bo/kUZfg3 #gameofthrones #baelor
This past episode was wild!
Leonardo Ferreira – @leualemax

Totally can’t believe they killed off NED!
Last night was the first OCWP Developer Meetup (OC WordPress), and it was a lot of fun! Here are some of the cool takeaways from that event…
Jeff Hester – @jeffhester
@zengy recommended Mac client for GIT: Tower http://t.co/bEBr0UN
Steve had some great ideas about how to properly treat code – with respect to other developers, the users, the testers, et al. Meanwhile, I am like that kid in the sandbox who is convinced that my objective should not be to make a sandcastle, but rather to get all the sand out of the box.
Stephen P. Kane – @web_tomatoes
@zengy Thanks for hosting again. Video embed mentions: Viper’s Video plugin, Jetpack or MediaElement.js. Generic YouTube embed #OCWP
Ahh, thanks Stephen! I had to roll out a little early so I hadn’t caught this, but I really want to look in to it. Media embeds are perpetually a sticky topic in WP.
So, why do I have a post about Dolphins?
Years ago, I read an article about the challenges of building contextual networks. I wish I had any idea where it was, I’d post a link to the original source. But, since I can’t, I’ll provide the gist of the article:
Context is tricky. Many words have multiple meanings, and we derive meaning from sentences by comparing the word to the words around it. Take, for instance, the term ‘dolphins’. Standing alone, the assumption would be that we’re talking about dolphins swimming in the water. But what if the sentence is, “I really hope the Dolphins win this year.” Now we’re probably talking about the Miami Dolphins. Same word, two completely different contexts.
This has become an important lesson that I’m applying right now in the development of Dashster. Continue reading Just a Post about Dolphins
I really like the new HBO show Game of Thrones. More to come.
It’s great to participate in forward-thinking groups. Here’s a few in Orange County that I participate in. I’m planning on jumping in to more detail and updating this list in the future, but for starters, here’s how I roll:
- SMMOC – Social Media Mastermind of Orange County (Meetup Group)
- OCTANe – Technology & Innovation investment accelerator
- WordPress Orange County –
